Aito M8 to headline Huawei’s 2025 automotive lineup

Huawei is gearing up to launch at least ten new vehicle models next year, targeting the high-end automotive market.

2025 is shaping up to be a pivotal year for the Harmony Intelligent Mobility Alliance (HIMA), Huawei’s ambitious automotive initiative. With plans to roll out over ten vehicle models, Huawei is significantly ramping up the lineup from this year’s six that comprises the Aito M5, M7, and M9; Luxeed S7 and R7; and the Stelato S9.

The confirmed additions so far include the Aito M8, Maextro S800, and a tentative second model under the Maextro brand. An insider told 36Kr that, in addition to new launches, existing models will receive significant upgrades. For example, an extended-range version of the Stelato S9 is expected to debut next year.

Among the most anticipated releases is the Aito M8, set to debut in early 2025. Positioned as a direct competitor to the Li L9, the M8 aims to fill the mid-luxury gap. While the Aito M9 was initially envisioned to rival the Li L9 most directly, Huawei views the M9’s average price of over RMB 500,000 (USD 70,000) as significantly higher, leaving a need for a model priced closer to the Li L9’s range.

Currently, the Aito series includes two bestsellers: the M7, starting at RMB 229,800 (USD 32,172), and the M9, priced from RMB 469,800 (USD 65,772). Together, these models achieved nearly 300,000 sales between January and October 2024. However, there’s a noticeable void in the RMB 350,000–450,000 (USD 49,000–63,000) price bracket—a segment where the Li L8 and L9 excel, with combined sales exceeding 130,000 units.

Will Aito M8 be the next big hit?

Following the success of the Aito M7 and M9, Huawei has high hopes for the M8. Insiders suggest that product experience will be a key focus in its competition against Li Auto.

Notably, a Huawei employee who owns both the Aito M9 and the Li L9 published a detailed comparison of the two vehicles’ software and features on an internal forum. This post gained significant attention, prompting Huawei’s leadership to prioritize software enhancements for HIMA.

According to Seres president He Liyang, user feedback on the M9 revealed challenges stemming from its advanced features, which some found overly complex. Unlike traditional luxury cars with physical controls, the M9 relies heavily on its touchscreen interface, posing a learning curve for some users.

To address this, Huawei is researching simpler user interfaces, using the Li L9 as a benchmark. These efforts could lead to significant improvements in its HarmonyOS software, enhancing usability across the lineup.

The Aito M8 is designed as a more accessible derivative of the flagship M9. While the M9 is a full-size SUV measuring over 5.2 meters, the M8 adopts a shorter front overhang, offering a more spacious interior. The M8 also shares the M9’s signature taillight design, complete with programmable light displays and festive patterns.

Additionally, the M8 will feature Huawei’s latest autonomous driving system, now in its 3.0 version. This system supports full-scenario, point-to-point navigation assistance, solidifying Huawei’s edge in intelligent driving technology.

With its Li L9 rival positioning, M9-inspired design, and advanced autonomous driving features, the Aito M8 has the makings of a bestseller. Yet, pricing and configurations will ultimately determine its success.

HIMA’s roadmap

As of October 2024, HIMA has delivered over 500,000 vehicles in just 32 months—a recordbreaking pace for the industry. Notably, the Aito M9 emerged as the top seller in the RMB 500,000-plus category this year, outperforming the BMW X5 and Mercedes-Benz GLE.

At the heart of this achievement is Huawei’s emphasis on intelligent driving technology. According to Richard Yu, CEO of Huawei’s consumer business group, around 70% of new M7 buyers opted for the intelligent driving edition. Collectively, HIMA vehicles have logged over 930 million kilometers in autonomous driving mode.

In Q1 2024, Huawei’s smart automotive solutions division generated RMB 4.7 billion (USD 658 million) in revenue, marking a 128.1% year-on-year growth and a return to profitability, thanks to strong vehicle sales.

Looking ahead to 2025, the Aito lineup will span the RMB 200,000–500,000 (USD 28,000–70,000) price range, reinforcing its dominance in the mid-to-premium segment. Meanwhile, Maextro will debut the S800, Huawei’s first foray into the RMB 1 million-plus market. The S800 is expected to elevate the brand’s prestige, with a second Maextro model planned for late 2025.

Luxeed’s strategy will focus on precision over volume, with new models slated for 2025. The Stelato S9 will also see a range of upgrades, including an extended-range powertrain and refreshed variants featuring a long-wheelbase design and a wagon body style. Additionally, Huawei plans to strengthen its sedan offerings, further diversifying its portfolio.

From family-friendly SUVs to luxury models, Huawei is steadily expanding its reach. With a growing and diversified lineup, Huawei’s HIMA is poised to further disrupt the high-end automotive market.
