NTT DATA, a Japan-based global technology services firm, is acquiring land for new data center in Malaysia.

In a statement on Thursday, the firm announced its proposed acquisition of a 68.5-acre parcel of land in Gelang Patah, Johor Bahru.

Upon development, the site will become one of the largest data center campuses in the Asia Pacific (APAC) region, comprising of six dedicated buildings and offering a substantial information technology (IT) load capacity of approximately 290 megawatts (MW).

The first building with an initial capacity of 48 MW is planned to launch in April 2027.

“With the APAC region emerging as one of the fastest growing and most influential markets for IT and data centers, our strategic land acquisition and development in Malaysia underscores our commitment to further expansion in the region,” said Doug Adams, Chief Executive Officer and President, Global Data Centers, NTT DATA.

According to him, Johor Bahru is an increasingly important cross-border economic zone due to its proximity to Singapore.

Yasuo Suzuki, Executive Vice President, Managing Director of Japan and APAC, Global Data Centers, NTT DATA, added that expanding in Gelang Patah enhances their digital infrastructure in Malaysia, drives APAC economic growth, strengthens regional ties, creates jobs, and fosters technological innovation.

The data center project in Johor Bahru will enhance Malaysia’s digital infrastructure, foster economic growth in the APAC region, and leverage NTT DATA’s strong partnerships in the region, said the statement.

The facility will feature new technologies like direct liquid cooling to meet the growing demand for artificial intelligence (AI) applications and integrate energy-efficient, sustainable design.

NTT DATA operates one of the world’s largest data center platforms, with over 150 facilities across 20+ countries.

The company is committed to achieving net-zero emissions in our operations by 2030 and across our entire value chain by 2040.

As part of this effort, the firm aims to power all data centers with 100 percent renewable or low-carbon energy by 2030.
