Sunway City Iskandar Puteri (SCIP), a property development division by Malaysia-based Sunway Property, has partnered Malaysian integrated solid waste management SWM Environment Sdn Bhd for the first cloud-based sustainable waste management system in Johor of Malaysia.

The duo said in a statement on Wednesday the cloud-based system powers SCIP’s recycling data monitoring and analysis across the township.

With this platform, SCIP gains real-time insights into recycling rates, facilitating better oversight of its sustainability initiatives and enhancing resource management.

It is noted that building on the township’s existing sustainability system, SCIP has successfully diverted a portion of waste from landfills.

Since 2018, SCIP has collected over 260,000 kg of recyclables through Sunway Big Box, Sunway Hotel Big Box, SJK (C) Cheah Fah, Sunway International School, and the support of the Residential’s Joint Management Body.

With the new data-driven approach, the township aims to substantially boost its landfill diversion rate – achieving the goals set out in the Iskandar Puteri Climate Action Plan 2030 (IPCAP 2030).

“Sunway Property remains dedicated to innovative solutions that advance sustainability in practical and impactful ways,

“Our commitment here is deeply rooted in the energy and passion of our young team in driving such initiatives towards shaping a greener future for Iskandar Puteri,” said Gerard Soosay, Chief Executive Officer of SCIP.

According to the statement, through this partnership with SWM Environment to launch this first-of-its-kind data system in Johor, Sunway City Iskandar Puteri is creating a new benchmark in sustainable township development, making it easier for residents to join their journey towards creating a greener future.

“This partnership is a bold step that allows KITARecycle in expanding into cloud-data based to complement our effort to digitalized incentivize recycling system and able to support the environmental, social, and governance (ESG) initiative done by our corporate partner,” said Mohd Norlisam bin Mohd Nordin, General Manager Corporate of SWM Environment.

He emphasized the importance of this landmark strategic partnership with SCIP, stating this strategic partnership underscores the firm’s commitment to leveraging SCIP’s effort in developing a sustainable and low-carbon township.

“Apart from providing the KITARecycle cloud-data based, we are thrilled to enhance our effort with SCIP in driving the communications, education, and public awareness (CEPA) particularly on fostering the separation at source (SAS) and recycling practice among the residents at home,” he added.

To date, SCIP’s community has contributed to the collection and conversion of over 4000kg of used cooking oil into valuable biofuels.

Through SWM Environment’s KITARecycle program, residents can also monitor and earn cashback on their individual recycling contributions – fostering a culture of responsible waste management.

Currently, the township is also home to two recycle drop-off stations at Sunway GRID and Sunway Boulevard 88 – funded by Iskandar Puteri Low Carbon Community Grant led by Majlis Bandaraya Iskandar Puteri (MBIP) that was in partnership with SWM Environment.

As co-investors of the township that grows hand-in-hand with its residents – SCIP pledges to build a dedicated recycling station in every upcoming development.

This investment in sustainable infrastructure underscores their vision of creating Sunway’s next generation of smart, sustainable cities, said the statement.

“As one of Malaysia’s most future-focused townships, we are committed to setting a new benchmark in sustainable development, paving the way for effective eco-living in SCIP,” said Gerard.

“Our partnership with SWM Environment marks a milestone in our journey to lead in environmental stewardship and smart township development in Johor,

“Investing in such efforts aligns with Sunway Group’s commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Goal 9, 11, 12, 13, and 17. In particular, we would like to emphasize Goal 17: Partnership for the Goals – where the way forward can only be achieved through the collective efforts of the developer, service partners, and especially the community,” he added.

SCIP is a township project in Johor with a gross development value (GDV) of more than MYR 30 billion ($6.76 billion) over 2,000 acres of land.

The low-density integrated township comprises 40 percent greenspace.

Sunway Property is the property division of Sunway Group, Malaysia’s leading conglomerate with diversified interests that is listed on Malaysian bourse.

Sunway Property builds, owns, and operates integrated townships and developments of more than 5,000 acres across Malaysia.

To date it has portfolio in Malaysia and abroad, including China, Cambodia, Vietnam, UK, and Singapore.
