YTL AI Labs releases Malaysian LLM ilmu 0.1
Malaysia-based YTL Power International Bhd’s artificial intelligence (AI) innovation unit YTL AI Labs has on Thursday announced the release of Ilmu 0.1 at the launch of the National AI Office by the Ministry of Digital.
YTL Power International said in a statement that Ilmu 0.1, is a Malaysian large language model (LLM) built by Malaysians for Malaysians.
Benchmarked against the Malay MMLU, the internationally recognized benchmark for the Malay language in LLMs, Ilmu 0.1 outperforms other LLMs globally in Bahasa Melayu, it said.
It noted Ilmu 0.1 demonstrates superior performance and a deep understanding of Malaysia’s culture and local context.
Notably, it has successfully passed both PT3 and SPM national exams in the Malay language, underscoring its potential to support various sectors effectively in local
applications and use cases.
“The launch of Ilmu 0.1 is a significant milestone for Malaysia,
“A Malaysian LLM that understands Bahasa Melayu and Malaysia local culture and context is crucial in advancing applications in all industries including finance, education, healthcare, and public services.” said Lou Yeoh, Executive Director of YTL AI Labs.
Last year, YTL announced a strategic partnership with Nvidia to bring their latest NVIDIA GB200 Grace Blackwell Superchip, the fastest supercomputers in the world, to Malaysia.
The YTL AI Supercomputer will be located in a 1,640-acre data center facility in the YTL Green Data Center Campus, Johor, powered by a renewable energy source from its on-site 500MW solar power facility.
This supercomputer will help meet the demand for highly scalable, highperformance cloud-based solutions for AI/ML workloads.
Johor, Malaysia, is within 50 km from some of the world’s densest network interconnection points in the neighboring country of Singapore.
“Malaysia has huge potential to become an AI Hub for the region and the world and in so doing will generate high quality jobs and boost the economy,
“By building a world class AI infrastructure and ecosystem, we look forward to working with the government towards the
establishment of Malaysia as an AI Nation with its own Sovereign AI Cloud and Sovereign LLM,” said Yeoh Seok Hong, Managing Director of YTL Power International.
“We are committed to working with international partners and local scientists to continue to develop Ilmu into a globally top performing LLM,” he added.
With ilmu 0.1, the 500MW green data center and the strategic partnership with NVIDIA to bring the worlds fastest GPUs to Malaysia, YTL has to date made an investment of over MYR 20 billion ($4.49 billion) in Malaysia in the artificial intelligence space.
YTL said the firm is committed to working with the government to build Malaysia into an AI Hub with world class AI infrastructure and a thriving local AI ecosystem.
YTL AI Labs specialized in data engineering and developing large language models to deliver tailored solutions for specific use cases across various industries.
