Zimbra, the global open-core email and collaboration platform, is strengthening Indonesia’s public sector cyber resilience through its partnership with PT Kereta Api Indonesia (PT KAI).

The duo said in a statement on Tuesday that this partnership highlights a growing shift toward sovereign, secure digital infrastructure to meet Indonesia’s rising demand for data protection and compliance.

Under the partnership, PT KAI, Indonesia’s state-owned railway operator, is able to upgrade its legacy email platform with a more secure and scalable alternative with Zimbra.

Zimbra’s Network Edition helps PT KAI gain full control over its communications infrastructure, ensure data security and compliance, and improve system reliability across a vast national network.

The new system integrates with PT KAI’s existing information technology (IT) environment, enabling better identity verification and operational coordination for more than 28,000 employees.

“Our partnership with Zimbra allows us to meet our current compliance requirements while preparing for future challenges,

“With local deployment, full encryption, and seamless system integration, we are able to ensure operational efficiency across our national network,” said Bagit Airlangga, Manager of IT Application and Data Center, PT Kereta Api Indonesia.

Marcus Teo, Chief Revenue Officer at Zimbra, added that as institutions like PT KAI modernize their communication infrastructure under national data mandates, Zimbra is proud to provide sovereign-ready, secure email infrastructure tailored to Indonesia’s regulatory landscape.

“This partnership underscores our commitment to supporting both resilience and regulatory alignment with the public sector and beyond,” he added.

These deployments highlight growing awareness among public institutions in Indonesia around the importance of digital self-reliance.

As regulators stress the need for in-country data storage, Zimbra’s on-premises, open-standard platform offers a reliable path forward.

Future phases are under consideration to expand the deployments further, both within the respective institutions and potentially across other regulated sectors.

The partnership serves as a model for secure, policy-aligned transformation as Indonesia advances toward its digital economy goals.

Ivy Lee, Zimbra’s APJ Vice President of Sales, noted Zimbra has seen significant growth in the Asia-Pacific region, specifically Southeast Asia, which drives close to a third of our global revenue.

She noted the company works closely with government bodies, financial services firms and small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) across the region, with priority markets including Indonesia, the Philippines and Thailand.

“The company has protected over a million new mailboxes in the past two years,

“We intend to invest in its SEA expansion in the coming months, supporting the region’s digital modernization efforts while helping organizations maintain control over their data and communication infrastructure,” she added.
