Malaysia-based Zetrix AI Berhad, formerly known as MY E.G. Services Berhad, has signed a teaming agreement for the establishment of the ASEAN China AI Lab in Indonesia, making it the second such center after the opening of the government to government (G2G) endorsed project’s flagship in Malaysia earlier this year.

The expansion of the initiative to Southeast Asia’s largest economy follows the signing of a Teaming Agreement today between Zetrix AI and Indonesia’s PT Royal Solusi Investasi (Royal Solusi Investasi), the firm said in a statement on last Friday.

Royal Solusi Investasi is part of Royal Group, a leading investment holding company in Indonesia with a proven track record in technology for both the public and private sectors, with a portfolio that spans a wide range of innovations, including digital transformation solutions, augmented and virtual reality, education technology, blockchain applications, internet of things, biotechnology, and carbon project development.

This agreement paves the way for the ASEAN China AI Lab to be brought to Indonesia, four months after the first facility was set up at Zetrix AI’s corporate headquarters in Petaling Jaya in Malaysia as part of a G2G initiative between China and Malaysia to collaborate on artificial intelligence (AI) development.

In accordance with its charter, the setting up of the latest AI Lab in Jakarta is supported by the respective governments to ensure smooth transfer of technologies and data privacy, especially with regards to cross-border applications.

“ASEAN can be an important centre for global AI innovation that caters to the needs of the Global South. We can provide a credible 3rd option to the present Western or Chinese models, a hybrid model that bridges the existing divide,

“It is our aspiration to continue to replicate this model throughout the Asean region and beyond,” said Zetrix AI Group Managing Director TS Wong.

Irawan Mulyadi, Chief Executive Officer of Royal Group, commented the ASEAN–China AI Lab will position Indonesia as a bridge between ASEAN and China in advancing artificial intelligence.

“Through open collaboration, we can bring together resources, data, and technology to strengthen Indonesia’s digital foundation,

“Our ambition is to ensure that AI adoption delivers broad societal benefits and helps build a stronger, future-ready nation,” he added.

Overall, the ASEAN China AI Lab project focuses on accelerating the convergence of blockchain, generative AI and robotics technologies in the region by bringing together
leading technology companies from China and ASEAN to jointly develop cross-border applications and customisation of AI services according to local culture and values.

In this connection, the emphasis of the Indonesian lab will be on replicating and localizing AI projects that have already been implemented in other markets to serve the market in Indonesia, the region’s most populous nation with over 285 million inhabitants.

The establishment of the ASEAN China AI Lab in Indonesia comes on the heels of the successful rollout of pioneering and global scale projects from the Malaysian lab, including the recently-introduced first of NurAI large language model (LLM), the first Shariah-aligned LLM in the world.
