Malaysian telecommunication firm CelcomDigi Berhad, through its Innovation Center, has announced a collaboration with key government authorities to develop Malaysia’s first artificial intelligence (AI)-powered traffic intelligence platform using neural networks and advanced analytics.

CelcomDigi said in a statement on last Thursday that these authorities include MyDigital Corporation (MyDigital), Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC), Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB) and Majlis Bandaraya Petaling Jaya (MBPJ).

According to the statement, this initiative marks a significant milestone as the firm becomes the first telecommunications company in Malaysia to deliver large-scale traffic intelligence solutions that support the nation’s Digital Economy Blueprint and smart city ambitions.

By combining CelcomDigi’s advanced connectivity, 5G capabilities and AI expertise with MBPJ’s urban management capabilities, the partnership aims to address pressing urban challenges such as traffic congestion, long queue times at intersections, road safety and infrastructure planning.

The solution is set to pilot across several areas within the Damansara constituency in Petaling Jaya (PJ) City, including PJ Sentral, SS2, and areas along the Damansara–Puchong Expressway (LDP) highway.

Meanwhile, CelcomDigi will generate real-time insights on traffic patterns by leveraging its AI-driven platforms, advanced connectivity and data analytics expertise.

Integrated with the council’s systems and data, these insights will enable smarter traffic light management, which allows AI-powered predictions of traffic flows to minimize bottlenecks at intersections. The predictive analytics dynamically optimize traffic light cycles, reducing queue times.

They will also provide the urban planning insights – data-driven models to guide road design, infrastructure upgrades, and city expansion.

They will also include dynamic road diversion systems – recommendations to ease congestion during peak hours, construction works, or emergencies.

According to the statement, this collaboration underscores Malaysia’s commitment to advancing its Digital Economy Blueprint and building intelligent infrastructure that enhances the quality of life for Malaysians.

The deployment of AI, 5G, and neural networks in traffic systems aligns with the nation’s ambition to harness emerging technologies for a more sustainable, connected future.

“This collaboration exemplifies the power of partnerships in driving Malaysia’s smart city agenda. By bringing together government, industry and technology expertise, we are making cities more liveable, sustainable, and efficient,

“The use of AI-powered traffic intelligence in Petaling Jaya is a clear demonstration of how Malaysia’s Digital Economy Blueprint and smart city vision are becoming reality, improving lives for the rakyat while paving the way for nationwide adoption. This is also in line with our AI Nation agenda,” said Gobind Singh Deo, Minister of Digital.

Meanwhile, Albern Murty, CelcomDigi’s Acting Chief Executive Officer said this initiative is a powerful example of how industry and government can come together to solve urban challenges by leveraging technology to deliver meaningful impacts for the nation.

“This pilot in Petaling Jaya is a first step towards scaling intelligent traffic systems nationwide, building a digital ecosystem where AI and connectivity come together to create safer, smarter, and more efficient cities,” he added.

Mohamad Zahri Samingon, Mayor of Petaling Jaya said Petaling Jaya is proud to be the first city in Malaysia to pilot this cutting-edge traffic intelligence solution.

“Traffic congestion and urban mobility are long-standing challenges for our community, and this initiative gives us a new way to manage them effectively,

“With the support of the government agencies and CelcomDigi, we are bringing smarter, data-driven infrastructure to PJ that will directly benefit our residents and set a model for other cities in Malaysia,” he added.

The partnership also supports Malaysia’s National Digital Network (JENDELA) initiative by reinforcing the role of connectivity and data in driving innovation.

CelcomDigi said the firm and its partners aim to scale the 5G AI-powered solutions to major cities across Malaysia, ultimately creating a robust digital ecosystem for intelligent transportation nationwide.
